Cabot Cape Breton

Two top-100 ocean links on Cape Breton. Cabot Links + Cabot Cliffs. The Canadian answer to Bandon, with one of the most photographed par-3s in golf.

Cabot Cape Breton is a destination golf resort on the western coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The property has two 18-hole courses — **Cabot Links** (Rod Whitman, 2012) and **Cabot Cliffs** (Coore & Crenshaw, 2015) — plus a 10-hole short course (The Nest). Both 18-holers rank in the world top 100; Cabot Cliffs has been ranked as high as #19 in the world. The 16th hole at Cliffs (a cliff-edge par-3 over the Atlantic) is one of the most photographed in golf.

The two courses

Cabot Links (Rod Whitman, 2012) — the original, a true links routing along the Inverness coast, ocean visible from every hole. Plays firm and fast, walkable, classic links character. Cabot Cliffs (Coore & Crenshaw, 2015) — the showstopper, perched on dramatic cliffs above the Gulf of St Lawrence, ranked as high as #19 in the world. The 16th (par-3 over the Atlantic) and 17th (par-5 with bonkers green complex) are the photo holes. Most crews prefer Cliffs but the Links is the more authentic links experience. The Nest is a 10-hole short course on a clifftop site — best after-dinner round at the resort.

Booking — moderately accessible

Cabot books 3-6 months ahead for peak July-August weeks. Off-peak (June, September) is easier — sometimes 30-60 days. Resort guests (Cabot Resort or one of the on-property villas) get tee-time priority over day-trippers. Caddies are available and recommended at both courses; ~CAD $90 plus tip per round. The resort is contained on the property — once you arrive, you stay.

Getting there

Cabot is genuinely remote. Closest airports: Halifax (4-hour drive) or Sydney NS (2.5-hour drive, smaller). Most US flights route through Halifax; some seasonal direct service to Sydney from Boston/Toronto. The drive itself is part of the trip — the Cabot Trail is one of North America’s great scenic drives. Plan for the travel day to be a full day; don’t try to fly in and play same-day.

When to go

June-September is the playable window. July-August is peak (most stable weather, full daylight). June and September are excellent and slightly cheaper. October is technically playable but weather is volatile. Avoid May — cold and wet. The resort is closed mid-October through late May.

Common questions

Is Cabot Cape Breton worth the trip?

For crews who want a top-100 links experience and don’t want the 18-month Bandon wait or the transatlantic flight to Scotland, yes. Cabot Cliffs alone justifies the trip — it’s a top-25 world course. Add Cabot Links (also top-100) and the Nest, and you have a complete 3-4 day destination experience.

How do I get to Cabot Cape Breton?

Fly to **Halifax** (4-hour drive to Cabot) or **Sydney NS** (2.5-hour drive, smaller airport with limited US connections). Halifax is more reliable for US flights. The drive is part of the trip — the Cabot Trail is one of the great scenic drives in North America.

Cabot Cliffs vs. Cabot Links — which is better?

**Cabot Cliffs** is the higher-ranked course (world top-25 vs. Cabot Links’ top-100) and has the photo holes (16th par-3 over the Atlantic). **Cabot Links** is the more authentic links experience — firm-and-fast, traditional links routing. Most crews prefer Cliffs but agree the Links is the more genuine links round. Play both.

When does Cabot Cape Breton open?

Late May through mid-October. Peak is July-August (most stable weather). June and September are excellent and slightly cheaper. The resort is closed mid-October through late May due to Nova Scotia winter.
